History
The history of Castleberry Hill is closely tied to the growth and evolution of Atlanta itself. The area was originally known as Snake Nation due to the numerous snake-like railroad tracks that crisscrossed the neighborhood during the early 19th century. The neighborhood’s name was officially changed to Castleberry Hill in the late 19th century, named after a prominent grocery store owner and resident, Daniel Castleberry.
In the late 20th century, Castleberry Hill experienced a renaissance of sorts. Artists and entrepreneurs began moving into the area, drawn by the historic architecture and the neighborhood’s unique character. The transformation of the neighborhood into an arts and creative hub was further solidified with the establishment of the Castleberry Hill Historic District in 1985. This designation helped preserve the neighborhood’s historic buildings and character while encouraging a thriving arts community to take root.
Today, it is a thriving and eclectic neighborhood that blends its industrial past with a vibrant arts scene and a growing residential community. “Being Mary Jane”, “Taken 3”, and “Ride Along” were all filmed in the spirited and beloved neighborhood of Castleberry Hill known for art galleries, loft apartments and, and an array of dining and entertainment options.
